Gran Plaza Mérida

Gran Plaza Mérida is the third largest shopping center in Mérida. You will find fashion, jewelry, computers, department stores, restaurants, supermarkets, banks, a movie theater and more.

It is 1km in front of Galerias Mérida, in the north of Mérida, so both malls can be combined in one trip. A few hundred meters in front is also an OfficeMax, a HomeDepot and a Sam's Club.

The Gran Plaza was opened in 1994 and was one of the first large shopping centers in Mérida. In its heyday, it was perhaps the most popular shopping center in the city.

Nevertheless, Gran Plaza was surpassed in size and attractiveness by other shopping centers, which also led to the relocation of some stores. Compared to the other large malls, there is significantly less going on.

The complex housed one of the first Cinépolis cinemas in Mérida (later taken over by Cinemex). However, due to increasing competition from other malls and the Covid pandemic, the cinema was forced to close in 2021.

Stores

Today, Gran Plaza is home to mostly national brands. There are many rather small stores (over 200 in all). You will find the well-known Mexican supermarket chain Soriana and the Mexican department store Sanborns.

You will also find a surprising number of financial service providers (HSBC, Santander, citibanamex, Banorte, Banco Inbursa and BBVA).

Above all, there are many small specialty stores for all kinds of things. And as with many similar large malls, there are two large anchor stores at either end of the mall: Liverpool and Sears (both are Mexican department store chains), offering a wide range of products.

Food

The food court of Gran Plaza Mérida offers a wide selection. Here you will find the typical fast food chains, such as Starbucks, KFC, Subway and Burger King.

But there are also many local restaurants like Cáucasa, Dona Gorda, Flautas and some more. But the focus is clearly fast food, you should not expect haute cuisine.

Fun for Kids

The Gran Plaza Mérida also offers some entertainment for children. Besides the movie theater there is a shooting range for children, a trampoline park and a formula 1 place for car racing.
