Parque de Itzimná
Parque de Itzimná, together with Iglesia de Itzimná, forms the center of the neighborhood of the same name. In pre-Hispanic times, there was a ceremonial center, where the Mayan god Itzamná was worshipped (hence the name of today's neighborhood).
In Mayan mythology, the god Itzamná is a upper god and a creator deity who resides in heaven and is one of the most important gods in the pantheon of the Classic and Postclassic Maya.
However, the Mayan sanctuary (and much of the area) was destroyed by the Spanish conquistadors (like many other places) and in 1710 the church Iglesia de Itzimná was built in its place. However, the construction of the current park did not begin until 1972.
The park surrounds the church and between the large areas of red cobblestones there are green spaces with bushes, sculpted hedges, large trees and palms. As usual in the parks of Mérida, many park benches invite you to relax.
There is also a fountain, although with its rectangular shape it looks more like a small pool. Around the park there are also the obligatory food stalls and a few restaurants.
Itzimná neighborhood
The Itzimná district has great historical significance and is considered one of the most beautiful of Mérida. With its modern townhouses and old neoclassical-style villas, it is one of the most populous in Mérida.
It is also the most active Catholic community in the diocese of Yucatán. A little less well known and off the beaten path in Mérida, the area has a very quiet and peaceful atmosphere.
