Here we go. During our Sisal tour, we witness each step of the transformation process of Henequen (also called “Green Gold” in this region), from the plant to the fiber, and then, from the fiber to the finished product.
In the past, big agaves plantages were needed to extract sisal from them.
But the agave plantations no longer exist today since the government has regulated the land and the cultivation on small areas isn't profitable.
We had the chance to see ancient machinery that has been rebuilt to its precise operational capacity. Today the old machines on the Hacienda are used for demonstration purposes.
Here the fibers are obtained from the agave leaves.
The fibers are further processed into ropes...
...and the ropes are rolled up by this machine.
Sisal was also sold as a raw material. The old press forms large bales of sisal.
By the way: The artist at work.
The finished end product.
In the garden of the hacienda we found beautiful big trees, exotic fruits...
...enchanted water fountains - although without water at this time, so I had to help out a bit with AI...
...and occasionally an unexpected surprise.
Our tour also include a visit to a traditional Mayan House.
In this case of the upper class.
Here we could get another impression of the former life.
Isaac Singer constructed 1851 the world's first sewing machine "Singer's No. 1" in just 11 days with a borrowed capital of $40 for the cost of materials. One Singer sewing machine also made it to the hacienda.
The original bathroom.
And - last not least - an old rocking horse of the time.
The tour continues. Aboard wooden platforms called "Trucks" were pulled by mules on Decauville rails to transport the fiber.
Today the wagons are used to transport visitors around the hacienda.
And instead of mules, horses are used to pull the wagons.
After a ten minute drive...
...and without disturbing the sunbathers...
...we visited another attraction on the property: A cenote.
